The first thing you need is a good pair of hair clippers. We like using Wahl, which has been in the business for over 100 years and makes some great products.

We use this one, but there are also other models available on Amazon, such as:

Wahl Color Pro Complete Hair Cutting Kit (9686)   Wahl Clipper Chrome Pro 24 pc Haircut Kit (9818)   And many more can be found here.

Look for a model with multiple length adjustments because that will help you get that perfect trim right from the start.

For example, if you’re looking to get your sideburns just right then choose a set of clippers with many length adjustments.

Grooming mirror

Another thing that you’ll need is a grooming mirror. This will help tremendously in the process. The mirror should have magnification and be lightweight because then it can easily be moved around to get different angles from all sides.

This one from Amazon has been great so far, but there are also other ones available on Amazon such as:

Magnifying Lighted Travel Mirror   Suvorna 10x 1 Inch Two-Sided Swivel Grooming and Shaving Makeup Cosmetic LED Vanity Mirror And many more can be found here.

Keep in mind that if you’re going to do this often, a heavier-duty grooming mirror with a longer handle would be better for your needs.

Step by step explanation

To start, you’ll need a comb and some clipper guards.

A set of good-quality plastic combs is always nice to have for this process. They can be purchased at most places that sell hair grooming tools such as Amazon or Walmart.

The next thing you’ll need is a set of color-coded combs. This will help when cutting your own hair because they divide the different sizes by centimeters so you don’t make mistakes while cutting your hair.

This can also help if you want to create designs in your hair, but it’s not necessary to do any of that if you’re just looking for something simple.

Blow dryer

  • Professional Design: Ergonomic handle and hanging loop for easy storage; Fast and easy drying allows...

To begin, make sure the hair is totally dry or it will be more difficult to cut. You can use a blow dryer if necessary, but keep in mind that this might cause frizz depending on the texture of your hair and the length you’re going for.

Next, part the hair down the middle from top to bottom. Make sure that one side is even with the other before you start trimming because then you’ll know exactly where that division was after you’re finished cutting everything else off back there.

Safety is important

The reason we like using clippers instead of scissors is that then there’s less chance of messing up what you’ve already done. Scissors require more precision and skill than clippers, so we’ll stick with them!

Now you’ll want to put the color-coded comb on the clipper. The teeth should be facing forward towards your head. If it’s difficult to put on then you need a smaller size. Do not attach the guard yet, though!

Note: We always recommend using guards when cutting hair because this helps achieve an even cut across all parts of the hair. It also makes sure that you don’t accidentally shave too much off, which can happen very easily if you’re inexperienced or in a rush.

This is especially true for men who are trying to trim their own sideburns while looking in a mirror. If there’s no guard on the clipper, then the hair will be cut too short and you’ll end up with an uneven result.

This set of clippers typically comes with a blade guard that’s placed between the handle and the actual blade to protect it from damage. It also helps to ensure that even length is achieved throughout your haircut.

Make sure that this is securely in place and not falling out or moving around during use! If it does then you can buy replacements like these:

Wahl Color-Coded Replacement Guards for Hair Clippers And many more can be found here.

Once everything is nicely in place, turn on your clipping machine by pressing down firmly on top while holding the grip. This will cause the teeth to spin fast which cuts through any hair that’s on there.

Pay attention to the angle

Hold it out at a 90-degree angle relative to the ground, and comb the hair so it covers all of the teeth evenly. Then press down lightly on top with your index finger while keeping your thumb pressed firmly underneath.

This will allow you to move the clippers up and down with ease as if cutting paper. Remember that this is not like sharpening blades with an oiled stone or electric pencil sharpener, these are fast-moving metal parts that can be damaged by oils or other objects getting inside them!

Be sure not to press too hard because this might make the machine jerk in your hand which could result in uneven cutting.

If this happens then apply less pressure until everything is smooth again. You may want to consider changing the blade if this happens a lot because it might be too dull in which case you need a new one.

Comb your hair

Periodically comb your hair back down to see how things are looking. If you don’t like what you see then make sure to use the adjustable clippers instead of color-coded since those will help you remove any stray hairs that didn’t get cut by using different positions on the guard by screwing them on and off.

The adjustable version basically has two blades that can be moved up or down independently which allows for more haircut styles because there’s less restriction on where the hair is able to go. Haircuts with longer top layers, fade styles, tapering, etc. would all be very difficult without the adjustable version.

Finally, make sure to clean up the machine by taking off the blade guard and running warm water over it while gently tapping on it with your finger. Make sure to turn off the clipper first.

This will get rid of any loose hairs that are stuck inside since they can’t go through the blades when spinning fast. After everything is thoroughly dry you’re good to go for your next use.
